Fragments features the quartet’s trademark electro-acoustic post-jazz improvisation, and masterful editing and production in a concise four-track release.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">We Will Intersect is co-led by Adrian Lim-Klumpes, celebrated Australian pianist and mastermind behind some of Australia’s most original instrumental groups Triosk and Tangents, as well sensational young Australian trumpeter and sound artist Nick Calligeros (Microfiche, SOFT SPOT). Co-leaders Adrian and Nick met 16 years earlier as music tutor and student, respectively, and have gone on to forge a strong musical relationship including this group. The group also features both drummer & producer Nick Meredith (KCIN), who from a single drum rigged up to his laptop, is able to achieve an entire palette of otherworldly sounds, and versatile jazz drummer Miles Thomas. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The four tracks of Fragments are short excerpts cut from an extended hour-long recorded improvisation that leads the listener through a masterfully constructed journey traversing multiple sound-worlds towards a cathartic conclusion.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Lim-Klumpes and Calligeros creatively edited each excerpt, constructing four distinctive and captivating sound-worlds. The first three tracks feature relatively restrained, experimentally-tinged soundscapes scattered with electronics and treated instruments, while the final track centres round a raw and impassioned trumpet solo over highly-compressed and gated drums and a ghostly piano track. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Nick says: <i>“This new record highlights the development of the group’s sound, not only in terms of strengthening ideas around group improvisation, but in terms of our post-production. Driven by a mutual sense of empathy, structure and form, they assemble their sound shards and bits and tiles into unique and unpredictable sonic mosaïques. Inside the project both a common shared esthetic and the individual researches find space and allowance, by this means melodious fragments transition into noisy outbursts, rhythmic elements dissolve into pulses or simply acoustic movements.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">The trio:</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">Edith Steyer is a free improvising and composing clarinet and saxophone player with her roots in jazz and classical music. As a former student for social anthropology she is also interested in world music. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">She is dedicated to the exploration of her instruments and makes use of preparations with music tools and elements from every day life. She experiments with drum skins, wind and water and, lately, with electronic devices and feedback. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">Aside from working on a solo practice, her foremost interest is to create intelligently woven nets of interaction and noisy sound scapes with other artists. Primarily working with found sounds and electronics, he also incorporates guitar and voice to some of his live sets.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">He graduated from the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal in 2018 and has been active on the music scene there through his involvement in organizing concerts with Kohlenstoff collective and Mardi Spaghetti as well as being an active musician.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">Apart from his solo practice through which he has collaborated with many other artists on a one-time basis, he is involved in different projects including Actors Artificial, SJF Trio and Larsen.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">He is also a trained sound engineer, working in live sound for contemporary classical music and in the studio (or on location) recording, mixing and mastering different projects.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Renewed frenzies of experienced sensuality. Everything must be credited to the contingencies of the poetic fury. Opened up again are the doors to the absurd, to the irrational, to the spontaneous, to the unexpected. Such as an exquisite corpse, everything is built from clippings, remnants, bits and pieces, or grafts. Slices of sounds, of melodies, gestated by free association and improvisation, meet, get piled up and are intertwined. The vibrant multitude of tones resonates to offer a dance with neither age nor timing. Randomness in the conception isn't an obstacle to burst open the senses and to surprise the wisest of the skepticals.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">Who said that collage techniques are useful just for the visual arts? Who said that improvisation and spontaneity are useful just to perform jazz music? Who said that synthesizers and computers are useful exclusively to compose and record electronic music? Who said that a piece of metal, a plastic tube, a glass of wine or a couple of stones aren´t musical instruments? Who said that the rusty strings of an old guitar, covered with dust and fluff, can´t invite to hum a memorable melody? Who said that stealing a single sound is an intellectual property crime when fusing it with other sounds, together they generate a new and unpublished timbre? Who said that music must obey linearity and sequencing rules? Who said that piling up sounds and melodies isn´t a compositional technique? Who said that mutilating recognized and respected poems is a sacrilege? Who said that a lonesome man can´t create such a massive wall of noise? Who said that recipes for expression and creativity do exist?</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">An invitation to musicalize a poem by Richard Brautigan served as the starting kick for this project. Having only one week to compose the music, create the arrangements and record the song, was a great challenge. Each one of the parts that integrate this song was recorded over one single Saturday afternoon. On the next day, the structure of the song was conceived and arpeggios, sounds and effects were overlapped, with the help of digital edition tricks. Vocals were recorded one day after that. During that week the guests who made their long-distance contributions from abroad or from other provinces, sent their recordings to add that special touch of theirs that can be heard all over the album.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">The experience was so stimulating and enriching that Mutantes Melancólicos (see also <a href="http://off-recordlabel.blogspot.be/2015/01/odg034-mutantes-melancolicos-mi-reloj.html">ODG034</a>) rebirth from the ashes couldn't be prevented. Their creative energy, their youthful spirits and their impudence served to dare to deal with classic poems, manipulate and adulterate them to create an unusual project in a musical career without a fixed course. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">Just five months later, eight new songs – close to a sound graft that flirts with the fusion of intergalactic spaghetti western and surrealist poetry – gave place to a spontaneous record, neither planned, nor projected. However, in anticipation.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">As many of the music parts were found pieces which were then overlapped – sometimes inserted or interlaced, to create the album cover for this album some images of a deserted landscape – that were stimulating enough to stick to those sounds – were taken off a profile from a well known social network´s website. With no guilt at all, colours were altered, shapes were intertwined, and completely new images of artificial paradises´ landscapes were created, again, by the grace of digital edition gimmickry.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">Composed, performed, produced and recorded by Gustavo Madrid (see also </span><a href="https://off-recordlabel.blogspot.com/2020/01/odg118-ensamble-desmembrado-cuarenta-y.html" style="color: #33aaff; font-family: arial; font-size: 13.199999809265137px; text-decoration: none;">ODG118</a> <span style="font-family: arial;">and </span><a href="https://off-recordlabel.blogspot.com/2021/05/odg142-madrid-solo-autres-directions.html" style="font-family: arial;">ODG142</a>) <span style="font-family: arial;">between the months of June and December 2022 at El Rosario with collaborations from: Omar Scavone, Jorge Pablo Almejún, Christophe Gallien, Philippe Heywang, Leo Kaplan, Christian Zerba, Juan Ignacio Ferreres and Marcelo Pérez.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><i>"The album´s title became evident to me while I was reading an art history book on the surrealist movement, an artistic avant-garde movement that I started enjoying during my teenage years when I got to know paintings by Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Giorgio de Chirico and Max Ernst on the catalog from an exhibition organized by the company where my mother worked at. Years later, when I studied Art History while studying Graphic Design at the Facultad de Arquitectura Diseño y Urbanismo at the University of Buenos Aires, I was introduced to the oneiric world of these fascinating artists that not only dedicated their lives to graphic arts but also to literature, poetry, cinema and theater. The constellation creates expressive schemes that dissolve in complex sound webs. A brassy and abrupt sound is followed by a dense, textural layer. The interplay is contrasted with solo playing. Disintegration with structuring, acoustics with amplification and electronics, the listener is always on unsteady waters. The sonic expression creates a sense of hurry, which runs through the entire improvisation. Shapeless episodes and a layering of diverse subjects make an identifiable expression of feeling impossible, getting lost in a dense web of sonic experiences, striving for release.</span></span></div><div style="caret-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); color: white;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial;"><span style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><br /></span></span></div><div style="caret-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); color: white;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial;"><span style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Fanny Chellé (born in 1993, France) is a clarinet and bass clarinet player who likes to navigate between classical music, contemporary music and free improvisation. In 2017 she founded the ensemble Mondkabarett with five musicians she met in Rennes, specializing in the music of Schoenberg (Pierrot Lunaire) and Kurt Weill. Coming from a classical background, she likes to experiment with other aesthetics, and is always on the lookout for new experiences to diversify her artistic practice (musical theater, contemporary creations). Free improvisation became a bigger part of her musical journey when she arrived in Zürich (2018), following Lucas Niggli's improvisation classes at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK), and discovering the Zurich music scene, among others at the WIM. In 2022, she created her solo project Système D, for amplified clarinet and effects pedals, combining improvisation and traditional music.</span></span></div><div style="caret-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); color: white;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial;"><span style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><br /></span></span></div><div style="caret-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); color: white;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial;"><span style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Räto Kessler (born in 1994, Switzerland) is a musician based in Zurich. On this latest EP, encym moves gradually from the granular explorations of ‘Swirl’ to the full-on broken beats of ‘LDNTWLGHT’, where menacing insectoid twitches woven around brutal pulses of electronica occasionally pull back to reveal washes of melodic guitar. <br /></i><i>Like all composers who work with visual images, the soundtrack-like qualities of encym’s instrumental work imply a journey of sorts.</i> <i>This particular journey is a trip to a twilight realm steeped in urban beauty. Enjoy the ride …” </i>Chris Jones, writer, UK</div><p style="text-align: left;"><i>“Glitches and stutters disintegrating and collapsing over a backbone of slicing and stitching.
