OUI059 : Rec1_Sat1_ / Rec1_

Cover art by Pierre Mariscal

OUI059 : Rec1_Sat1_ /  Rec1_

This project started from the meeting between Lydie (see also ODG200 and ODG203) and Damien Thonnard in July 2022 during a contemporary jazz workshop given by Bo van der Werf.

Hadrien Pierson and Guillaume Ruelland joined them shortly afterward to form the current quartet.
Between written and improvised parts, they compose music through which each can express themselves in their own language while remaining aware that a collective universe unites them.

The central point around which the project is structured is the rhythmic aspect of music. Through metrical superpositions, shifting accents, and polyrhythms, the musicians attempt to approach another space and time, in which listening is multiplied.
It is at the heart of this creative process that unique and specific improvisational contexts emerge.

This is their first proposal. Enjoy!

OUI062 : Machine Mass Trio / As Real as Thinking

Cover art by Elisabeth Waltregny

OUI062: Machine Mass Trio / As Real as Thinking

Originally born as a side-project of douBt, this new trio led by Tony Bianco (on drums and loops) and Michel Delville (on guitar, bouzouki and live effects) also includes emerging Belgian talent Jordi Grognard on saxophones, bass clarinet and flute. “As Real as Thinking” is an amazing mix of fiery licks, catchy themes, telepathic rhythms, shamanic soundscapes and processed loops -- testifying to the band’s compositional flair and extraordinary musicianship. The music is meaningfully condensed -- consistently powerful without being overwhelming -- and will appeal to fans of progressive jazz, world music and rock audiences with an ear for the unusual. The CD sounds alternately groovy and meditative, trancy and punkish, modern and ethnic, cloudy and clear. It also features an explosive 18-minute duet between Bianco and Delville (guitarist also with MoonJune Recording artists' The Wrong Object) -- showcasing the musicians’ seemingly boundless energy, and extraordinary capacity to listen to each other and improvise over insane chord, rhythm and time changes while handling live electronics.

Originally released on Moonjune records in November 2011.

Tony Bianco: drums, percussion, loops
Michel Delville: guitar, synth guitar, bouzouki, electronics
Jordi Grognard: tenor sax, flute, bass clarinet, electronic tempura

OJP083 : Alessandro Ciccarelli - Cristian Maddalena / Spiritual Exercises for a Young Unsui

Cover art by Alessandro Ciccarelli

OJP083: Alessandro Ciccarelli - Cristian Maddalena / Spiritual Exercises for a Young Unsui

Eleven improvisations for trombone and shamisen (a Japanese three-stringed instrument) form the spiritual exercises through which Ciccarelli and Maddalena explore fragments of melodies, timbral textures, and onomatopoeic sounds enriched by instrumental preparations.

The interaction between the two instruments unfolds in a delicate balance of analogies and contrasts, where the trombone and shamisen engage in a dialogue that oscillates between introspection and dynamism. This relationship creates a mutable sonic landscape, blending references to tradition with gestures of daring experimentation. Each track offers a profound and unpredictable listening experience, inviting the audience to embark on a sonic journey that delves into the intimate connections and creative tensions between the two instruments.

The word "Unsui" (literally meaning "clouds and water" in Japanese) is closely associated with Zen Buddhism and refers to itinerant monks or novices on their path to spiritual enlightenment.

The metaphor of "clouds and water" evokes a state of constant motion and transformation, free from attachment, like clouds drifting across the sky or water flowing through rivers—embodying the principle of impermanence and detachment. Similarly, the music of Ciccarelli and Maddalena in Spiritual Exercises for a Young Unsui unfolds as a continuous flow, exploring sonic territories that dissolve and reassemble in an unpredictable and profoundly evocative dialogue.

OMT018: Cheikh Bayefall / Hey Man

'Hey Man' is sung in Wolof with vocals by renowned artist Metzo Diatta, the song speaks of the mirror effect of human beings, of how what we see of ourselves is not interchangeable.
It's the perpetual battle of life: 'you against yourself.'

Cheikh  Bayefall is a singer, songwriter, percussionist, composer, musical director and dancer
born in 1978 in Louga - Senegal.

A multifaceted artist, Cheikh Bayefall bears the stage name of this branch of Mouridism, a large Muslim brotherhood in Senegal of which he is a member, and which helps him cultivate essential qualities as an artist: humility and a certain taste for self-sacrifice. Artistic biography:
His passion for music continues to push him forward, particularly through his participation in the group AFRICAN TOUCH, with which he gained recognition during a performance at the Saint-Louis Jazz Festival. In 2012, 2013, and 2014, he performed alongside jazz greats such as Jerry Gonzalez, Javier Colina, Raymondo Amador, Antonio Carmona, Randy Weston, El Hambre, Maria Alba, Michaela Rabitsch & Robert Pawlik, among others.
Numerous stage opportunities then opened up to him, and he performed in theaters and cultural centers across Europe, both solo and with others. He traveled to Madrid, Cordoba, Bern, Lausanne, Paris, Millau, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Brussels, Gembloux, Hasselt, Antwerp, Milan, Turin, Bassano del Grappa, among others. In 2008, he sang alongside Bebe, a famous Spanish artist, for the soundtrack of the film "Princesa de África." In 2009, the Afro- Flamenco project was organized in Dakar.

That same year, a similar collaboration was launched with the embassies of the United States (cultural section), Sweden, and Austria.

OUI058 : Sumooi / Sumooi

Cover art by Alicia Steigerwald

OUI058 : Sumooi / Sumooi

Sumooi is the newborn project of Daniel Jonkers (Sonic Hug, N∆BOU), Leonard Steigerwald (ALIGAGA, BSFOE) and Stan Maris (Kreis, Kin Gajo), an acoustic trio navigating the space between composed ideas and improvisation.

Their self-titled debut album features original pieces by all three members, shifting between calm, spacious moments and rhythm-driven interplay.

Unusual in their instrumentation, the trio finds form in fluidity, drawing the listener into each moment — a thoughtful first release from a group listening closely, to each other and to the music as it unfolds.

Style wise one can recognize influences of Scandinavian artists like ADHD or Skuli Sverrisson and Belgian artists like Joachim Badenhorst or Ruben Machtelinckx.

Daniel, Stan and Leonard

Stan Maris - accordeon:
Stan Maris is a Belgian accordionist and composer, primarily active in the jazz and improvised music scene. Stan has worked and played with artists such as Sofia Jernberg, Robert Landfermann, Joe Talia, Praed Orchestra, Nate Wooley, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, and others.

Ever since leaving the conservatory in 2021 he is very active on the Belgian music scene being a sideman/co-leader of multiple projects such as: ALIGAGA, Abstract INC., BSFOE, Sumooi, Jazmyn with which he has performed a number of concerts all over Europe and has recorded more than 15 albums.

OUI056 : MOTMOT / Floating

Cover art by Silvia Marazzi

OUI056 : MOTMOT / Floating

MOTMOT is the project of singer Chiara Bacci, where composition intertwines with improvisation and sonic exploration. Alongside Chiara are saxophonist Adia Vanheerentals, pianist Simon Groppe, and drummer Gaspard Sicx.

The lyrics speak through images, short stories, and fragments, while the music creates calm atmospheres that are sometimes abruptly interrupted. The structures unfold horizontally and, when they return, they reappear in a new form.

Chiara, Adia, Gaspard and Simon

Floating, the group’s debut album, moves along the line separating dreams from reality both in the writing of the lyrics and in the unfurling of the music. Recorded on July 13 and 14, 2024 at Zinnema (Brussels) by Dries Van Ende who also handled mixing and mastering.

Chiara

Chiara Bacci is a Brussels-based singer and composer. Her way of using the voice combined with electronics plays a fundamental role in her practice as it allows her to develop an idea of vocality which is no longer necessarily anchored to its traditional function, as she passes nimbly from being a storyteller to a source of abstract sounds.

OUI061 : MACHINE MASS feat. Tony Bianco - Michel Delville - Dave Liebman / Inti

OUI061 : MACHINE MASS feat. Tony Bianco - Michel Delville - Dave Liebman / Inti

MACHINE MASS feat. Dave LIEBMAN pairs the legendary saxophonist (Miles Davis, Elvin Jones...) with longtime collaborator drummer Tony Bianco (Elton Dean, Paul Dunmall, Evan Parker, douBt) and guitarist Michel Delville (The Wrong Object, douBt).

Graced by Liebman’s extraordinary phrasing and improvising skills, “INTI” combines free improvisation with tight rhythmic structures, post-Bitches Brew time signatures with ambient episodes, spreading across different musical and spiritual realities, both playfully and intensely. The band ventures into the fiery electro-jazz territories explored by Bianco and Delville’s recent Machine Mass Trio, which also showcased both musicians’ capacity to listen closely and improvise over unpredictable chord, rhythm and time changes while handling live electronics and computer loops.

Back cover of the original cd
