ODG127 : Xtof Calis / Actif et réactif

Xtof Calis is the moniker of Belgian musician and composer Christophe Calis (see ODG122).
As a philosophy student Calis discovered the work of French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. This inspired him to develop the concept of ‘devenir-son’,  ‘becoming-sound’ and to explore how sound can territorialize the body. With the aid of laptop, synthesizers and guitar, Calis' sound-sculptures create contemplative and meditative affects in a unique style of ambient music, marked by an experimental and glitchy edge.

Xtof Calis about his album:

"This album is a follow-up of my first album, “Le tragique” (2011). Both or inspired by a book by Gilles Deleuze, namely ‘Nietzsche et la philosophie’.The first album was made in about seven days, this second one took me about seven years. The reason for this time-lapse is called “fatherhood”. Becoming a father of two sons, renovating a house and having a full time job changed my life drastically. I never stopped making music, but I just couldn’t focus on finishing this album. I made more than a hundred sketches of songs. During the summer of 2019, I finally could bring back my full attention to this project.  I started to select the sketches that I liked the most and started to improvise over them with only one goal: finishing what I started, to explore the concept of sound-becoming further."

    ODG128 : Ringhold / Turning Corners

RINGHOLD are an Estonian duo who plays unorthodox & experimental blues.
Some call it melancholic, some say it’s sort of a freaky danceable music.

eleOnora on vocals has been described as Jim Morrison channeling Meredith Monk. A machine gun? No problem! Dadaist gibberish? Easy!
Kalle Tikas on electric guitar has been titled as one of the leading guitar pickers in the Baltics.
Active since 2014, the duo has released two studio albums – debut album “Ringhold” in 2016 and “Hello Bob!” in 2018.

Their new album "Turning Corners" was recorded live during their 2018 tour in various European cities.

Fuji Yuki is a Japanese singer who performe in a Japanese Experimental / Improvisation music scene. She is a big part of the Japanese experimental music scene.

She uses her voice like an instruments using some special vocal techniques, glossolalia and electronic pedals to twist the sound of it.
She is best known as the vocalist, improviser, performer, bassist and vocalist of the duo Sarry.
When performing solo, she sings in her self style which as she's explaining is " a deep trip drone that connects this world to the next".

Her musicality transforms the vocals like a ambient drone or early church music reminding at times a prayer.
Her performances are always different depending of the place and space and by the inspiration coming from the spirit of buddhism and shintoism which are widely followed in Japan.

    ODG124 : Mathieu Babinot / Ghost Hands

Mathieu Babinot, a 31-year-old self-taught musician, started music by learning the guitar on his own in parallel with his studies in applied arts.
It was through the discovery of artists such as Tangerine Dream and Morton Subotnick that he became more interested in electronic music and let himself be guided in more “experimental” directions.

What he is saying about Ghost Hands:
"The EP is about fatality, the desperation of not having control over what surrounds us, of being overcome by events and, in a sense, by the powerful who intervene in our destinies.
I chose to narrate this subject thinking to the bombing of Hiroshima where the Americans, to demonstrate their powers to the Russians, bombed the Japanese who were about to surrender. Far away from conflicts, life stopped for a whole city and population when it was not necessary.
Ghost Hands is a term that refers to people who survived the blast, having skin burnt by radiation, especially on the hands and the rest of the body."

Digital release on the 6th of August 2020, the 75th birthday of the Hiroshima atomic destruction.

    Track listing:

    1: Ghost Hands, Pt. 1
    2: Ghost Hands, Pt. 2
