OUC053-OUI069 : Adrian Lim-Klumpes feat. Chris Abrahams & Novak Manojlovic / 3 Pianos
3 Pianos documents a commissioned performance work by pianist Adrian Lim-Klumpes (Triosk / Tangents), premiered at Phoenix Central Park on 17 February 2022, featuring Chris Abrahams (The Necks) and Novak Manojlovic (Microfiche).
Made for Phoenix’s unique architecture, the piece treats the space as part of the instrument: piano sound travels in fragments across the room, blurring who is playing what. With limited ability for the performers to clearly hear one another, a semi-improvised score provides shared structure for pacing and form.
The music moves from three solo improvisations into an extended trio set, with each piano retaining a distinct voice in the mix as the sound overlaps and decays through the room.
Adrian Lim-Klumpes is a Sydney-based pianist, composer and improviser, known for his work across electro-acoustic music, long-form improvisation, and contemporary composition. He is a core member of Triosk and Tangents, and his solo releases include Be Still and Yield (Preludes and Fugues for Piano - see OCD036). He also leads and co-leads collaborative projects including We Will Intersect, extending his work into ensemble and site-responsive performance contexts.
Chris Abrahams is a New Zealand-born, Sydney-based pianist and composer, best known as a founding member of the internationally acclaimed trio The Necks. Alongside his extensive group work, Abrahams has released a significant body of solo piano music, beginning with Piano (1985) and continuing through later solo and electro-acoustic releases. His work also includes composition for screen, including the soundtrack to The Tender Hook, with major award recognition for his film scoring.
Novak Manojlovic is a Sydney-based pianist, composer and improviser working across acoustic and electronic music. He was awarded the 2019 Freedman Jazz Fellowship, and is known for projects including HEKKA and Microfiche, with a practice that blends composition, texture, and high-intensity improvisation.
