OVD057 : Marc Van Eyck - Pierre Vervloesem / Tamtams

Marc used to play drums on the first recordings of Pierre back in 1987...so after 35 years he came back naturally to Pierre with a series of drums patterns he recorded over the years for different projects and bands : Asoha, Someday and In The Ginza (with Pierre), Largo, Studio Pagol...

Pierre added guitars, basses, keys, effects, mixing and producing.

The result is quite exotic running from India, to dub, to hell from jazz and Vervloesemesque typical music! Olé hop!

OUC039 : Céline Lory - Gil Mortio / Erik Satie Vexations - Piano - Electronic

What Céline says about her proposal:

"Vexations - the musical piece and its succulent title - have been with me for many years. Short, simple and original piece - I incorporated it in several of my shows, I also participated in its collective performance “marathon” in Bozar a few years ago. So I liked the idea that the musical piece would be on my path again in 2021 since its evocative title reflects our current experience. Calling on producer Gil Mortio was a way of breaking away from the routine of solo rehearsal and radically turning to a reinterpretation. Starting from a "classic" version revolving around the piano and its playing modes, he turned, kneaded and rearranged the piece. By playing, among other things, with the indomitable length prescribed by the composer, he creates a play of colors and shapes with acid tones aligned in spectral layers."

LEMOND is the nickname of Thierry Mondelaers, Belgian song writer “known” in his country as the singer of X-legged-Sally the Flamish pataphysician metal funk jazz band with whom he recorded two albums in the late nineties. After XLS ‘s split he went on with « A GROUP » with Peter Vermeersh and Pierre Vervloesem (deUs first album producers), made two albums — the first having been produced by Spencer Chrislu (Frank Zappa’s sound engineerer).

In 2000 he started with a solo project and recorded 17 songs of his own under the name of LEMOND and performed around Belgium with his own band (Anne Fontigny, Didier Fontaine, Pascale Vervloet).

Raised at the breast of English pop music, French variété, TV soaps, film music, he studied music by himself, studied painting & philosophy in Brussels

His teachers were Andy Partridge, Georges Brassens, James Ensor, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. The result is an eclectic bunch of songs wherein melody and soundscapes are the main actors.

OVD056 : Pierre Vervloesem / Not Even Close - Remastered and revised 2021

What Pierre says about the album:

'14 tracks originally composed or recomposed for a production ‘Peter Vermeersch (Flat Earth Society)/ Josse De Pauw’ in which I was invited to participate in the same way as in "Weg" another ‘Vermeersch/Vervloesem/De Pauw production’.
But once the production started, I was told by Mr. Vermeersch that all the music had already been composed by himself and that there was therefore only a place for me as a musician within the orchestra.
So I obviously declined my participation and transformed these little pieces into more or less electronic things since it costed nothing.
Hence the title "Not Even Close » (from the original intention)! Originally released in 2008, here they are refreshed with the technical possibilities of 2021 with also an added bonus track.'

OCD050 : Baby Fire / Grace

Cover art by Alice Smith

OCD050 : Baby Fire / Grace

Emerging from the back alleys of the Brussels alternative scene, Baby Fire (see also  OCD018OCD033ODG070 and ODG120) is a trio defined by a rock style which is full of rage, haunted, powerful and refined.

Body and soul of the project, the guitar player, Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock, grew up between London and the European capital. Music lover and avid record collector, she did the rounds of the hard rock circuit as well as the great bastions of punk such as the famous London Marquee Club. One evening at a concert in Brussels, she crossed paths with Ronnie James Dio, the emblematic voice of Rainbow and heavy metal culture hero. He listened to her first demo tape and encouraged her to keep singing.

Close to the aesthetic defended by artists such as P. J. Harvey, Shannon Wright or Carla Bozulich, Dominique began to shape her universe through contacts with personalities she met at venues in her own country and abroad. Among these are Eugene Robinson (Oxbow), Dana Schechter (Insect Ark, Swans) as well as Eve Libertine and Penny Rimbaud of Crass. In 2014 'The Red Robe' album came into being in the heart of Dial House, mythic headquarters of the British punk collective.

Among the guests of Baby Fire’s 5th album one finds Laetitia Shériff (‘Eternal’), Mike Moya from Godspeed You! Black Emperor (‘Grace’), as well as two punk legends united on one track: Eve Libertine and G.W. Sok (‘Love’).

The artwork by Alice Smith is a reference to Dominique breaking her shoulder shortly before the ‘Grace’ recordings. Following this accident new songs and new themes emerged: the deconstruction and reconstruction of the self, and the search for grace.

Line-up: Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock (voice, guitar, loops & theremin), Lucile Beauvais (guitar, keyboards & backing vox), Cécile Gonay (bass, violin & backing vox).

OUC038 : REER PROJECT / Erik Satie Vexations - Un Théâtre Acoustique

OUC038 : REER PROJECT / Erik Satie Vexations - Un Théâtre Acoustique

REER PROJECT was created with the intention to analyze artistic traditions, identify rules and patterns, question them, create new music without strings attached, move forward and explore boundaries.

REER PROJECT is a music duo founded in Berlin in 2021 by Esther Kretzinger and Georges-E. Schneider. Both musicians have their musical background in the classical music and pursued their individual careers as solo and chamber musicians for years after they had graduated from the renowned Mozarteum University Salzburg.
During this period they have been working together numerous times and got intensely in touch with contemporary and avantgarde music, visual arts, electronic music, fashion and different creative trends.
Esther and Georges launched numerous projects together over the past years, REER PROJECT being the latest one in the row.
Since 2020 they run their own music production company “Kulturhaltestelle” in Berlin.

REER PROJECT creates its music using voice, violin and computer as main instruments, adding different sound sources, samples, computer rhythms and analog effects to create a unique up-to-date sound experience.

What they say about their Vexations project:

"As musicians with a classical background, we have dealt with Erik Satie’s music numerous times over the past years. Satie as an artist is iconic for many musicians today and is considered as one of the pioneers of minimalism, many see an ancestor of ambient music in his music. But this is just one side of Satie and as we started to think about our contribution to this project, we agreed that we would like to dedicate ourselves to other sides of Satie’s highly versatile personality. Satie is not only to be associated with minimalism, Satie is also to be associated with nightlife entertainment, absurdism, dadaism and satire. According to certain sources, Satie could have meant Vexations as an ironic comment to Richard Wagner’s music, or even as a parody of the meaningless virtuosity of the perpetuum mobile genre.

In our version of vexations, we chose to condense contradictory musical elements and styles and layer them into a dense musical collage held together by Satie’s repetitive musical phrases. We used elements of avant-garde, jazz, techno and electroacoustic music, sometime disassembling Satie’s original chords or re contextualising them into new harmonies. This resulted in a piece of extreme contrasts between extremely fragile lines - especially in the voice - and jarring accumulations of sound. To create a special atmosphere, the voice makes uses of breath as an important element of expression beneath digital sound processing. The violin sound runs through several analog and digital effect chains at the same time, which process the sound simultaneously in different ways and at the same time interact with each other. We also had the idea to integrate the bombastic language of Satie’s publications for the “Metropolitan Church of Art of Jesus the Conductor”, a one-man sect Satie had created, into the piece. Satie supposedly composed Vexations in the same period in which he created his one-man sect and we found quotes related to this one-man sect to be a necessary artistic paraphrase of Satie’s affinity for satire and absurdism."

OUC037 : John Americus Witt / Cacoethes

Cover art by Silas Plum

OUC037 : John Americus Witt / Cacoethes

The brillant American composer (see also ODG115OUC026OUC033, OUC034 and OUC036) return with another great thematic.

Cacoethes is the root of a few longer phrases. Cacoethes Scribendi is the phenomenon of writing as a mania, or a terrible habit.  Cacoethes Loquendi is the same notion, but as regards the need to talk ceaselessly and at length.  Cacoethes in a general sense is an irresistible urge to do something unadvisable.  Few things more succinctly define the course of Human history better than this simple notion.  Settle in.  It’s a long one.

The Depression Rabbits are sweet little guys who come around when it’s time to completely give up.  This is a temporary state, mostly.  A time to let fatigued muscles breathe and the particular mania of the season to subside a bit.  They are a boon, really.  Trouble is, they can also be seductive.  It’s harder to start a cold engine.  This Cacoethes is simultaneously the urge to continue and the urge to stop.  Be wise or be lucky.

Violate Flemish Themes is an interlude; the shortest song on any album by a good bit.  It is also an anagram.  There are two on this album.  We’ll get to the other one in a minute.  This one is about coming home.  How this can be both victory and defeat.  Some animals travel huge distances to breed and die in the same place they were born.  Some people do the same.

Stark Red Augustines is the other anagram. The original wording and this garbled transliteration both encourage self-destructive behavior that feels great.  Free and alive.  Saint Augustine seemed to think that Evil sprung solely and fully formed from the heart of Man, and that anything divine was to be held eternally blameless.  It’s a good trick.  Trouble is, everything costs.  Always will.  Even the most charitable of us eventually get tired of footing the bill.

Cacoethes is the last track, serving as a macroscopic study of the relentless glacial furrow we have plowed across the face of the Earth.  Stops and starts.  Relative quiet and relative chaos.  A working memory of maybe 80 years, give or take.  Repetition is the game here.  What we want remains in conflict with what we want to want.  It is a problem without resolution.  This song, at the very least, ends.

Digital release on the 18th of February 2022.

1: The Depression Rabbits
2: Violate Flemish Themes
3: Stark Red Augustines

ODG155 : Sylvain Van Iniitu / Sylvain van Iniitu ~plays Django Reinhardt

Cover art by Camille Tsering

ODG155 : Sylvain Van Iniitu / Sylvain van Iniitu ~plays  Django Reinhardt

Sylvain about his album:

"To be honest, I was not a fan of Django Reinhardt at first.   His untouchable iconic status, his guitar virtuosity emulating hordes of followers eager to imitate him to the nearest note, the emphasis on speed and dexterity in his playing : all this was enough to put me off from the start. While the guitar was my first instrument, I almost instantly turned to the opposite path: saturation, approximation, obscurity, experimentation, slowness. In short, a dead end.

Twenty years later, a few good lessons learned along the way, I finally discovered the man behind the music, and it is above all this that pushed me to listen again, differently. First of all, to be touched by the story of a precociously gifted musician, who lived through a catastrophe that completely incapacitated him (let's remember that at 18, he was seriously burned in a fire in his trailer and lost the use of two fingers on his left hand) and who somehow found the strength to completely reinvent his playing: not only to find, compensate, but finally to surpass what he had previously achieved. Then, to become aware that this musician did not live alone, but in a community of friends, of encounters, and in his discovery through various encounters of jazz, to take the measure of his instantaneous capacity to assimilate and syncretize a new music.

In the meantime, I stopped playing guitar and spent the last few years developing a sequencer that I tell myself is "home-made", but in fact owes a lot to an invisible community : the one that develops microcontroller technology, makes software available online to everyone, describes in tutorials how to let them drive synthesizers and expanders through the MIDI protocol. A sequencer in which I have been implementing for years routines that give a lot of space to chance, but which also define the limits within which it can play freely. In this case, this machine allowed me, from a digitization of Django Reinhardt's pieces, to use fragments of them, and to vary them as I pleased, with a bit of hazard. In all this, who is the author of what you will hear ? Django, the Technique, the programmers who ensure the intermediate stages of digitization, those who built the instruments, me?

Usually associated with a whole guitar mythology, some of Django Reinhardt's pieces are here translated into completely synthetic versions, with the help of a home-made sequencer, whose playing parameters can be randomly modified. A way to explore transformations, processes, limits of legibility and recognition, a mise en abîme of virtuosity through technique, an apology of simulacrum and infinite transformations, of the recycling nature of creativity, a passage from the burnt hand that plays to the incapable hand that codes...

A path of wandering between creative fire and cold technical complexity, I hope it will take you beyond the disfigurement to find a familiar figure in a new light."

Sylvain van Iniitu:

Born in 1976 in Ath. In the mid 90's his main interest was focused on collage, using various processes to corrode and disintegrate fragments of paper, already verging towards the limits of perception and meaning. In the next decade, shifting his focus to music, he started recording and experimenting with sound fragments, field recordings and crude, mostly second-hand or broken instruments, as well as free softwares. From 2008 on, he ran the music label ini.itu, also designing the sleeves of most vinyls. In the winter of 2013 he launched the E42.A8 sessions, based on improvisation in a remote area in the countryside. About the same period, starting to develop his own MIDI sequencer, and out of the need of visualising transformations brought by algorithms, he was paradoxically led again to the visual arts, augmented by the know-how of now being able to develop his own homemade graphic softwares. His main interests now lie in the themes both visual and auditory of processual transformations, (un)readability, interactions between form and meaning, alterations of alphabets, texts and scores,  including braille and MIDI files!  www.iniitu.net
