ODG164 : Ruben Van Rompaey / Orienbient

New album from Dutch electronic composer Ruben Van Rompaey (see also his albums feat. Toshinori Kondo OJP057OJP061OJP062 and OJP065) doing a mix of orientalist ambient music, therefore the title of the album: Orienbient! Perfect to bring you to another mood in this cold December month!

From Ruben's words:
"The long-awaited sequel to Tokyo Fusion, Orienbient represents a coalescence between worlds of ambient and oriental music in the broadest sense of the word.
More precisely: ambient with an oriental touch. For this album I wanted to create a fresh musical realm, letting musical outings naturally blend with organic beats, layers of oriental percussion instruments such as riqq and darbuka surrounded by invigorating vibes."

With a strong Pan-Asian, Japanese spirit obviously present as ever, the music takes the listener through mystic, hypnotic sound palettes laced with sonic oscillating structures and mesmerizing melodies.

Listen to the music, close your eyes and…for a brief instant you imagine yourself in another, magical state.

OMT013 : El Gueye / Tameu

Cover art by A.L.

OMT013: El Gueye / Tameu

Tameu is the new single from Senegal star El Gueye (see also OMT005).
It means 'inseparable' in wolof.
A simple story of 2 people that cannot live separately.

El Gueye has already recorded 3 albums and is recognised as one of the best singer and composer in Senegal.
The Senegalese musical heritage is better known than that of most African countries, thanks to the popularity of this mbalax style and Sabar drumming is particularly popular.
El Gueye is preparing a new album that will include lots of new different elements going further away from Mbalax.

ODG163-OUI004 : MACONDO / Macondo Trio

Cover art by A.L., pic by Sylvain Debaisieux

ODG163-OUI004 : MACONDO / Macondo Trio

Macondo trio is the union of Beninese drummer Angelo Moustapha, accomplice of Philip Catherine, Lionel Loueke, winner of numerous awards (best drummer in Africa, 2017; Talent d'Afrique, 2021) and Belgian saxophonist Sylvain Debaisieux, essential player in the jazz and improvised music in Belgium (Stéphane Galland, Pentadox, Lynn Cassiers, Ghalia Benali).

For this trio formula, they added the talented Italian double bassist Federico Stocchi (Toots Thielemans Awards 2018).

The sharing and richness of their respective musical journeys created immediate emulation, and their ability to listen and adapt quickly led to a strong musical connection. They joyfully and naturally take the audience into their world rich in polyrhythm and melodious stories.

Inspired by African hymns or trips to Europe, the melodies are built on cyclical and captivating bass lines. The listener is carried away by the flow and energetic sound of the trio, engrossed in repetitive patterns and confusing grooves. They share voices, exchange high-level solos and improvisations, always in a spirit of dialogue and in communion with the public.

ODG162 : Lark Wool / Blurs In The Margin

Cover art by Jack Ison

ODG162 : Lark Wool / Blurs In The Margin

Lark Wool  (see also his previous album ODG033) "Blurs In The Margin" is a contemporary digital palette and common electronic instrumentation conjuring and forging  a hybrid mix of "The Otherworldy" with "The Traditional".

The 6 tracks conjugue an impeccable sense of equilibrium and a crafted balance between the instruments. The music is sometime paisible but at times brings forces with subtle drumming and percussions.

Lark Wool's music is maybe a reminder of many atmospheric / cinematic genres but his approach of building track is one of his own which succeeds in a beautiful and orgasmic album!

Listen with earphones for a total enlightenment!

ODG161 : Friendly Fire / Friendly Fire

Polyrhythmic Grindcore? Dark Metal meets Drone...??
Prevalent use of saxophone feed back...dense bass drones, countered with layered drum structures. Flying on top of all this are vocal rant`s in an unknown language! Not easy perhaps, but you will not be bored! As a great actress once said in an well known film: “ fasten your seat belts it`s going to be a bumpy ride”.

When the best American sax player of the moment ( grammy, pools, magazines) James Brandon Lewis (see also OCD038 and OCD046) meets one of the most interesting French Fretless bass electronic visionary Floy Krouchi (see OCD047) and French avant-garde drummer Benjamin Sanz and they spend a week improvising in the south of France, they come with one of the best contemporary jazz album of the year!

Thrilling!

Floy Krouchi: Fretless Bass, Pedals
Benjamin Sanz: Drums
James Brandon Lewis: Tenor Saxophone

All titles are improvisations except 'The Three Streams' composed by J.B Lewis, F. Krouchi and B. Sanz.

Recorded on 25 and 26 March 2019 by Bruno Levée @ l’Ajmi d’Avignon.
Mixed by Mark Bingham @ Prairie Des Femmes, Arnaudville LA, March 2022.
Mastering by Pierre Vervloesem @ Fiasco Studio.

Review in the New-York City Jazz Record:

"Lewis ventures off the map on Cliffs, an eponymous triumvirate completed by the French pair of fretless electric bassist Floy Krouchi and drummer Benjamin Sanz. The former, whose Bass Holograms project in New York enlisted the likes of drummer Ches Smith, cellist Hank Roberts and singer Emilie Lesbros, supplements her sound with effects ranging from ambient washes to jagged distortions while with his combination of textural mischief and locomotive meter, the latter shows why his credits include David Murray, Archie Shepp, Oliver Lake and more. The centerpiece, and at 22-minutes by far the longest track, the jointly composed “The Three Streams” evolves through multiple moods from brooding sustains, from which emerge a searching melody sketched by feathery tenor, to an electric bass meditation over a sparse soundscape, to a percolating vamp, which finds Lewis stretching out too, his rhythmic cadences echoing Sanz’ pulse, before uniting in a repeated ostinato to finish. On the remaining five improvs the trio carve an egalitarian path, but one which often breaks into mesmeric beats and not only during the descriptively titled “Transe With Arabesques”, but also in the rocky opening “The Door To The Cliffs”, where Krouchi comes on like a revving motorbike and Lewis brings a reflective whiff of John Coltrane. Even in such almost entirely uncharted territory, Lewis’ penchant for form shines through, in the alternation between a siren-like oscillation and strings of pneumatic squeezed-out notes and in his juxtaposition of similarly contrasting figures elsewhere."

ODG160-OUI002 : Joseph Nowell Trio / Sketches

From Joseph words:
'I met Manolo at a jam in Antwerp in 2018 while I was studying there for my master in jazz piano. We then began having sessions in Brussels together with Gaspard, playing standards, originals and improvising. I moved back to Italy before the pandemic, but we stayed in touch and in 2021 we decided to make a recording of my compositions, in Manolo's home studio in Brussels. The compositions are quite diverse, some are quite old and others more recent, and they have various influences ranging from 20th century classical music and dodecaphony, to free jazz, to more traditional jazz harmonies, etc...the 2021 recordings which make up the album were the first time we had played together after 2 years of pandemic. We spent four days recording, with a great, vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere. On the last day we felt like we had good takes of all the tunes, so Manolo and I decided to try some duo versions, treating the material very freely. This is where the "sketch" takes come from. The album is called "Sketches" because our intent in the compositions was for them to be merely starting points for us to improvise as freely as possible, whilst maintaining ourselves to the material, in the same way that a sketch is a rough, preparatory drawing and not something completely defined or organised.'

Joseph Nowell was born in England in 1994, half Italian. He started playing piano when he was 4 and studied at Pimlico Academy, London, with trips and concerts in Paris and Prague. At the age of 14 he moved to Siena (Italy), winning the third prize in the “G. Burrini” classical music competition a year later. I followed studying jazz at various places and with various teachers, participating in a lot of workshops.

He has collaborated with Emanuele Parrini, Tony Cattano, Amedeo Verniani, Tobia and Michele Bondesan, Giuseppe Sardina, Erik Bogaerts, Camilla Battaglia, Borrkia, Danny Bronzini, Finaz, Jesse Dockx etc. I have played at Pistoia Blues, Jaffa Jazz Festival (Tel Aviv), Footprints Jazz Festival (Gent), Vivi Fortezza (Siena), Teatro Sociale di Rovigo, Teatro Persio Flacco (Volterra) and dozens of other venues and clubs in Italy and Belgium.

OJP067-OUI009 : Space808 / Dimensional Stairs

The new album by this space adventurous quintet jazz combo (see also OJP047) was recorded on January 19, 2022 at Nakano Pignose in Tokyo.

5 long tracks that navigate through ambient experimental space jazz. The sax, the guitar and the piano weave a spiritual fabric that make you float in your mind while the rhythm section bring a smooth but solid texture.

The whole performance is again a total improvisation but a steady and thrilling one! An album that you can listen over again and again and always discover something new, being sounds or spirit! Enjoy!
