In the early days of cinema, silent movies were actually not silent. While a film was shown on screen, movie-goers would hear music accompaniment, often performed live by a pianist or even a small orchestra at the theatre. 
We revisit this practice by inviting two musicians, saxophonist Minyen Hsieh and guitarist Chen Ying-da, to provide a live soundtrack to archival film footage made by Deng Nan-guang, a pioneer in Taiwanese photography. 
This 8mm footage serves as a rare visual document of the lives of ordinary Taiwanese and reflects the colonial history and political situation during the 1930s and 40s.

Minyen Hsieh, is a highly regarded, award-winning Taiwanese saxophonist. The Taipei native, born in 1981, started to perform professionally at the age of 19, and studied at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels. There he studied with John Ruocco and Jeroen Van Herzeele. His strong improvisation skills and rich tone has made him a coveted player in several genres varying from: jazz, rock, hip-hop, electronic to avant-garde. Outside of Taiwan, Minyen has also been welcomed to grace stages through Japan, China, HK, Macau, Malaysia and more. He won the Taichung Saxophone Competition in 2012, and regularly contributes to various jazz, pop and experimental projects in Taiwan. His most recent recording is the well-received, best-selling "Firry Path" (2014).

Ying-Da Chen, guitarist and composer. Born and raised in Taiwan, received his classical music education in Taipei - Soochow University and jazz music education in Holland - Conservatorium van Amsterdam, graduated in 2012 with high opinion of "High artistic level; personal, unpredictable approach and compositions”. Currently working and living in Taipei, performing and writing music is his daily life. 

Besides the jazz music playing, free improvisational music and contemporary music are also his strengths. His music can be described as beautiful, private, and unsocial, which can be heard on his award winning album "R.E.M MOODS"(JAZZHUS DISK/Jp-3119) and his new album in 2017 "Animal Triste"(SONY MUSIC 88985494902).

Matthew James, aka Boxface, returns with a new album! 

Doors is an instrumental, genre-bending voyage through lush sonic landscapes, down dark, distant hallways, and past the outer reaches of infinite space.

Though there are still angry and powerful piece typically Boxface, this time except for one song, there is no vocals. 10 instrumental pieces going through many genres, from psychedelic to prog to electronics to folk to... here is to you to discover which facette of Boxface you like best! I'm for all his styles!!!

A note from Boxface:

"This piece has an interesting history. It wasn't originally supposed to be a Boxface album at all. I wanted to explore the different aspects of sound and to do so, I imagined walking down a hallway lined with doors. Each door I would walk through would transport me to a unique auditory realm. I walked through fields of wheat, lifted into space where I found myself isolated in the cold cosmos, and buried myself in walls of relentless pummeling distortion. The more invested into this project I became, the more I started to realize that this project had taken on a life of its own. It had the weight of a full LP and must be treated as such. To cap off the 9 song suite of shorter pieces, I added 2 pieces that culminated everything learned on this journey. Pools takes the softer, ambient side, and Infinity fills the air with everything loud and raucous while also serving as a tribute to stoner metal anthems. I poured my sweat and blood into this release, and I hope you allow yourself to become immersed in the journey it entices."

Based on their own interpretation of James M. Cain’s classic novel “Mildred Pierce”, Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock and Alwntr team up and deliver a dystopian soundtrack to one of the greatest American stories of the 20th century. They both imagine alternative chapters that draw Mildred’s fate into murder, poisonous gardening, humiliation and vengeance.

After releasing 'FRAME' last December (see OJP024) where she was featured on a Robert Edwin song and which was one of their first collaboration, Ryouko Aomasa wrote more piano pieces. This time, Robert added just a few of his typical signature sounds, like a bit of spices, and mixed the tracks in order to keep the purity of Ryouko San piano play.

She studied the piano as a child but didn’t play it for many years. Instead she went on learning Koto and Shamisen from various teachers, among others the living national treasure Masatoru Imafuji, and made a career as a traditional Japanese music player with those instruments.

It is only five years ago that she was invited to collaborate on the piano with a Shakuhachi player.

She then started to collaborate and play with singers, dancers for the last years.

It is her first time to compose properly songs. Her approach is free, based on her foundations of traditional music.

As Ryouko says: "In music, there is a wonderful thought for the sound itself, even the sounds that I am sending. I always think that I have a willingness to separate from myself. I want to know where the sound is born and where I want to go."

I leave Italian musician Carlo Osinski speaks about his music:

"These compositions are free from any kind of musical dogma, such as phrasing, rhythm, chorus or leitmotif. 

They should be interpreted as contemporary, ritual Haikus. 

The white noise that fills our everyday routine is here exalted. 

Through improvised sonic expression we resume contact with the Father / Son Archetype. 

In shamanic tradition, songs and music have no author. Sounds and notes come from the Spirits to the Tsaman through dreams or through trans phases. The Shaman thus becomes a Channel for the voice of the Great Spirit. His job is to become a stick for the great cosmic drum of existence. This concept is also found in Indian tradition, where the Spirit speaks to us playing music through Krishna’s flute. Same thing happened in the days of the Neolithic, when music did not have any author, the sound and the songs singed by man were considered nothing but the voice of the spirits. 

All sounds in this EP are not attributable to the musician itself, but have to be conceived as the voice of an invisible, but present and persistent, realm around us. That's why all sounds you hear are first takes, no exception. They are the result of direct contact with an improvised and artistic energy form. 

For this reason, this EP is deliberately against any musical canon (an artifact of human experience itself) and fully embraces the Hermetic / Theosophical concept of hacking the "true" to unravel the false and the illusion. 

The Sound of Theosophische Werke becomes a representation of internal vibratory motion and drifting of the Akashic Records. 

Notes : 

This work is best enjoyed through solitary listening, headphones, semi darkness or blindfolded. 

It should be used as a tool for meditation, rituals, studying, reading (sacred lectures, bohemian poetry) and also: cooking, love making, plant feeding, plant consuming.

When not playing as BOAT - The Bureau of Atomic Tourism (see ORT004, ORT006 and ORT015), Teun Verbruggen and his friends becomes a quartet with Teun on drums and objects, Jozef Dumoulin on Fender Rhodes, Nate Wooley on trumpet and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten on double bass.

KaPSalon was recorded live at Jazz Middelheim in 2014 by Roel Snellebrand and mixed / mastered by Richard Comte in Paris in 2015.
