ODG239: Charles-Eric Charrier / ViE
Originally released in 2 separate albums under the band name vlady Miss: first the Ep 'Muter/mute in April 2020 as an auto production, then the album 'ViE' in January 2021on a small French label.
Music long since freed from all constraints and burdens.
What the press wrote at the time for 'ViE' (extracts):
1: in Indiepoprock by Yan Kouton
"VIE in capital letters, couldn’t better express what comes alive on this album; so many vibrations, resonances, weightless notes, short phrases whose astonishing grace never ceases to captivate. This combination of sounds and silences into which we are immersed, this ensemble of rhythms and pitches, nuances, and the timbre of the voice truly constitutes authentic poetry. A complete poetry, both sonic and written, at once sensual and spiritual, profound and visceral.
"VIE" is a truly great album by a musician at the height of his powers, showcasing the serene power of his vision. It's worth noting that the album is accompanied by a magnificent visual extension: a series of videos that further enhance the appeal of this essential "VIE."
2: Sun BURNS OUT by Benjamin Berton
"Highly active as a solo artist, Charrier returns with a seven-track album for which he wrote the lyrics and composed the music in collaboration with Laurent Komlanvi Bel. The record boasts a rich production and an electro-folk warmth that lends it a captivating, woody, and magical texture. One is reminded of the singer-songwriters of Hood and the entire new folk galaxy on the sublime "Cingle," with its crackling, generous electronica reminiscent of a crackling fireplace. "The Komlanvi's Song" is delicately pastoral and beautiful, like something by John Martyn. ViE is one of those albums that is best listened to rather than analyzed."
And about Muter/Mute:
1: Indiepoprock by Yan Kouton
"Seemingly simple, this new EP appears to capture the very essence of music, oscillating between experimentation, unconventional jazz, and mutated blues. But this doesn't truly reveal the mystery carried by these tracks, barely accompanied by Charles-Eric Charrier's minimalist poetry. The essential element lies elsewhere."
2: Indierockmag:
"Co-produced by Laurent Komlanvi Bel, with whom Charles-Eric Charrier released the album Rising at the end of 2018, Muter/Mute gives pride of place to the acoustic guitar, and even to guitar duets, without stagnating in prettiness, far from it! Thus, the immaculate and no less organic folk romanticism of the title track gives way against a backdrop of distortions to Charrier's sensual prose before morphing (mute?) into a saturated percussive trance, while the reveries of Assembler, illuminated by ambient layers, gradually gain intensity with the deconstructed strikes and other hypnotic effects, evoking early Labradford or even The For Carnation. As for the shimmering meditations of the summit, Raccompagner Léger, their African blues accents become increasingly drone-like, shamanic, and raw under the impetus of the toms and electric swells, revealing some affinities with the excellent William Ryan Fritch/Vieo Abiungo, much to the delight of aficionados like ourselves. An EP as short as it is vibrant."
